Our Counsellor in Training (C.I.T) Program is for Grade 9 students ready to become counsellors or instructors, bridging the transition from camper to staff in summer camps. It combines tackling summer camp challenges, leadership development, technical skills training, and conflict resolution, all while enjoying the camper experience.

Inventor Academy is dedicated to fostering leadership and technical skill development and collaborates with The STEAM Project on initiatives aligning with their shared mission of advancing STEM education. Through this partnership, The STEAM Project provides equipment, expertise, or other resources to Inventor Academy, enhancing its educational programs and impact in the community.

During the program, participants are required to execute their own personal project with a chosen special focus. Over the course of the month, the C.I.T.s will be given time, tools, and software to plan, develop and build a specialized project of their choice based on their experience and personal interests.
Personal projects allow C.I.T.s to collaborate with instructors to build their project from scratch, as well as more time to master technical skills that will be used throughout the program. These culminating projects encourage participants to develop their passions and interests while simultaneously refining their technical skills.

We will contact the C.I.T. applicant to arrange a virtual interview. In the interview, we will determine if the C.I.T. applicant meets the selection criteria (please see below FAQ for more details)
“The C.I.T. Program has definitely taught me to be a more outgoing and friendly person, and that’s helped me a lot because I’m usually pretty quiet. My favourite memory is from the first cabin group I got paired with as a C.I.T. On the last day of camp, they made me a little charm, and that was so special to me.
My Personal Project was a V8 engine that I 3D printed. It had 8 cylinders with pistons that moved like an actual engine!”

“Being a C.I.T. was really fun! My favourite part was planning camp challenges and activities for everyone; I even created my own superhero scavenger hunt for Spirit Day.
For my personal project, I’m really into psychology, so I built a 3D brain! The inside is made up of circuits with LEDs that light up different parts of the brain with colours, and it’s meant to show how colours can stimulate different psychological reactions in the brain.”

What we look for in a C.I.T. program candidate:
Throughout the summer, staff will give the CIT coordinator feedback that will be reviewed with CITs regularly. At the end of the program, a final evaluation summary including the CIT coordinator’s observations will be available. This evaluation can be used as a reference when applying for future jobs.
We ask that all CITs make the commitment to the program for at least 2 sessions (4 weeks total) to receive a fair and full evaluation.
It is very difficult for high school students to become staff members without completing the C.I.T. program. Campers that have successfully completed the C.I.T. program have priority consideration to be hired as future staff.
CITs are given more leadership opportunities than our senior leaders campers. Senior leaders spend a majority of their camp day as a regular camper, and participate in leadership activities for a portion of each day. CITs will be working on leadership training and activities all day long. They also have the opportunity to work on a personal project with direct mentorship from our staff.
Campers that completed the senior leader program have a higher likelihood of being accepted to our CIT program.
